Monitor Arm vs Monitor Stand vs Monitor Riser

Often you must be using a monitor of your desktop or an external monitor connected to your desktop or laptop for your professional assignments, gaming sessions, or entertainment purpose. Every monitor is either mounted on its own stand placed on a monitor riser stand, or mounted directly on a monitor arm. Monitor stands and monitor arms are widely popular, and both of them have their Pros & Cons. Spending longer hours looking on the monitor takes its toll on your neck, back, shoulder and vision. We all already know about the harmful health effects of long sitting on a computer desk.

The way how your monitor is placed will affect the level of stress on your neck and eyes while you work on your computer. You can use the monitor’s own stand, an external stand-alone stand, a monitor riser, or a monitor arm to elevate your display’s height and make other adjustments to it. Hence it is essential to place your monitor correctly, and in this article, you will be able to identify which one suits you better to address your needs.

Monitor Arms

Almost all monitors come with their stand, but there are many limitations in terms of flexibility and adjustability. Also, sometimes these stands are not a good choice for the best use of your limited desk space. To address all these issues, there are monitor arms, which are available in a wide variety, like wall-mounted arms, desk-mounted arms, single monitor and multiple monitor arms, etc. They are highly adjustable in terms of height, swivel, tilt, distance, and rotation adjustments and will free up a lot of space on your desk, which you can use to place other important stuff. You can use these arms with your regular computer table and a standing or adjustable work desk. It comes with a lot of ergonomic advantages due to its flexible nature.

The monitor arms provide you convenience and comfort and let you work for longer hours with minimum stress on your body, and hence you will experience improved productivity. Adjusting a monitor arm is very easy, and it should take a few seconds to adjust it according to your need. Hence they are also time-saving, unlike other adjustable stands or desks available in the market. If you work in a team, you can quickly move the monitor to share and show it to your team members.

What to look for in monitor arms:

#1. VESA Bracket Size:

VESA is the standard followed while manufacturing monitors and monitor arms which defines the spacing and pattern of the holes used to screw the monitors with the monitor arm or other mounting alternatives. Most VESA compliant monitors and arms come with a 100X100 pattern, which means 4 pre-drilled screw holes at a distance of 100 mm each in a square pattern. Other popular patterns are 75X75mm or 200X200mm, depending on the size of the screen. You should check the spacing of the pre-drilled holes at the back of your monitor and match it with the one provided with the monitor arm.

#2. Range and Ease of Adjustability:

You should check the type of adjustments and the range of each adjustment available in the respective monitor arm. Here are the usual adjustments available in monitor arms:

  • Height adjustment
  • Screen tilt adjustment
  • Forward and backward movement to adjust monitor distance from the user
  • Horizontal Swing (left-right movements)

#3. Weight Capacity:

Check the monitor arm product description or product guide to see is its weight-bearing capacity. A good monitor arm will hold anywhere about 4 to 20 lbs (each arm).

#4. Monitor Size Compatibility:

Usually, monitor arms can mount monitors of any size, but they are still not compatible with specific monitor size.

#5. Mounting options:

This is important as it is critical to balance the arms properly, and it also depends on your workspace. Here are some of the mounting options:

  • Desk clamp or C-Clamp Mount: You can screw the mounting arm over the edge of your desk using the C-shaped clamp at the base of the mounting arm. An important specification to note here is the thickness of the table required to clamp it up.
  • Grommet Screw: This type of monitor arm is screwed securely through the hole on the work desk. Here also, the desk thickness.
  • Wall Mounted: As obvious from the name, you can directly screw these monitor arms on the wall, great for saving desk space.

#6. Number of Arms:

The widely popular mounting arms available are the ones that can accommodate 1,2, or 4 monitors at a time. You can choose them according to your needs.

#7. Arm Type:

There are usually two types of arms used in a monitor arm, as follows:

  • Dynamic monitor arms: The adjustability movements in these arms are very smooth, and they are considered better in terms of flexibility and precise screen positioning. The base arm adjusts and moves directly from its end attached to the clamp, which has an extended bendable arm for further adjustments.
  • Post mounted monitor arms: It has a center pole along which the height could be adjusted. The extended arm is used for other adjustments.

Pros of Monitor Arms:

  • Highly flexible
  • Almost all adjustments possible
  • Easy to adjust
  • Saves space
  • Available in different sizes to accommodate single or multiple monitors

Cons of Monitor Arms:

  • Challenging to assemble compared to monitor stands and risers
  • Expensive
  • The monitor should be VESA compatible

What is Monitor Arms good for:

  • If you have a non-adjustable work desk and are searching for an option that allows for all types of quick adjustments.
  • You have limited space on your desk and looking to create more space
  • If you work in a team, you have to frequently share your display with other team members for a review, for example, a graphic designer.
  • If you are a gamer, you need to adjust the monitor according to your different sitting positions.

Monitor Stands

Monitor stands are simple equipment with a base to place on the work desk. It has VESA brackets to fix the monitor over it. They are free-standing on their base and don’t need any drills and other complex assembly processes over the desk or well. You can directly place them on your desk and fix the monitor on it. Though, they provide limited adjustment options and range. Most monitor stands come with a height adjustment option, while few of them also have a tilting and pivot mechanism to allow you to use your monitor in a vertical or portrait orientation. Usually, the stand allows you to install a single monitor, and they have limited weight-bearing capacity. While some of the stands also support dual monitors stacked vertically.

What to look for in monitor stands:
